Discover Chania: A Local Orientation Walk Through My Hometown

Welcome to Chania! I'm Vangelis, a professional mountain guide born and raised in this historic city. I spend nine months of the year living in Chania and the remaining months based in Chamonix, France.

While I am a certified outdoor guide rather than a licensed historical tour guide, this walk is designed to share the absolute highlights, atmosphere, and hidden charm of my hometown through the eyes of a local. We will stroll together through the key landmark areas, giving you a great orientation and a true feeling of the city.

Meeting Point:

Our meeting place is 1866 Square, right at the beginning of Halidon Street (outside the office). (If you prefer a different meeting spot in the Old Town, we can easily adjust to your preference.)

What We Will See & Explore:

• Metropolitan Church & Historic Splantzia: We begin our walk near the Metropolitan Church and head into the vibrant Splantzia area to see the square and the iconic Church of Agios Nikolaos (famous for its bell tower and minaret).
• Arab & Venetian Quarters: We stroll through atmospheric alleyways, passing the Turkish Minaret, traditional Arab and Venetian houses, and the historic city walls.
• Venetian Arsenals & Kastelli Outlook: We visit the landmark Venetian Arsenals (shipyards) and walk up to the Kastelli area to enjoy a wonderful elevated view over the Old Venetian Port.
• Topanas & Firka Fortress: Passing the iconic Yali Mosque, we explore the elegant Topanas neighborhood with its grand Venetian architecture, reaching the Firka Fortress.
• Jewish Quarter (Ovreaki): On our loop back to 1866 Square, we wander through the historic Jewish quarter and past its ancient synagogue.
