[Story] Avalanche Survival: 3 Encounters & Critical Lessons
When the Mountain Speaks: 3 Times I Came Face to Face with an Avalanch
The news from the Karakoram has once again frozen the global mountaineering community. On the slopes of Broad Peak (8,051m), a massive avalanche swept away an international team of mountaineers, leaving behind a heavy tragedy.
Whenever nature reminds us of its power in such a harsh way, memories trigger automatically. The memory of the body and mind never fades.
Throughout my mountaineering journey, I found myself trapped in an avalanche three times. Three moments when the snow reminded me just how small we truly are before it.

Whenever nature reminds us of its power in such a harsh way, memories trigger automatically. The memory of the body and mind never fades.
Throughout my mountaineering journey, I found myself trapped in an avalanche three times. Three moments when the snow reminded me just how small we truly are before it.
1986 | Lefka Ori / White Mountains (North Face of Spathi): First Contact
As part of the Mountaineering School back then, the north face of Spathi in the White Mountains had a tough ordeal in store for us. An avalanche detached and swept us down the northern slope.
The greatest fear during that first experience was not just being buried, but the violent tumble onto the rocks and the uncertainty of the outcome. Luck and the team's prompt reaction kept us on the surface.
1988 | Mount Olympus (March 25th): Pitch Darkness at "Anathema"
Two years later, on the well-known route from "Anathema" on Mount Olympus, an avalanche overwhelmed us. This time, it buried me completely.
Down there, there is no light. You see absolutely nothing — only pitch darkness reigns. Snow forces its way into your mouth and nostrils, freezing instantly, your breath is cut off, and all you have left are your thoughts. I was lucky that my companions dug me out and rescued me in time, on a day that unfortunately left a heavy mark on Greek mountaineering.
2016 | Mont Blanc du Tacul (Alps, August 16th): The Serac Collapse
In the Alps, early in the morning on the north face of Mont Blanc du Tacul, the collapse of a massive Serac triggered a sweeping avalanche that carried away many climbers on the field. There were severe injuries and, unfortunately, casualties.
I was lucky once again: the avalanche carried me, but without burying me dangerously. That was where the importance of mountain experience and composure showed. Those of us who survived reacted immediately, knew exactly what to do on the field, and instantly initiated rescue, assistance, and extraction procedures until the airborne rescue teams arrived.
The Legacy of Knowledge
When the mountain claims people at a young age — like Ueli Steck years ago, or the climbers on Broad Peak today — the pain of loss is indescribable. Along with every human life lost so unfairly, the vast experience they carried quietly disappears as well. The opportunity for that wisdom to be passed down to younger generations is lost, precisely at the moment it was maturing.
Conversely, mountaineers like Reinhold Messner, who managed to emerge unscathed through the decades, had the blessing to stay behind, to speak, to teach, and to pass that wisdom on to future generations.
This is also the responsibility of those of us who were fortunate enough to return from the avalanches of 1986, 1988, or 2016: Not to keep the experience to ourselves, but to share it.
Prevention, Equipment, and Practical Training
Experience and respect for the mountain must always be accompanied by proper equipment, as well as continuous practice with it. In winter mountain conditions, reaction time is everything.
Anyone moving in a winter environment must always carry the holy trinity of avalanche safety:
- ARVA / Transceiver: Always switched on and transmitting.
- Probe: For accurately locating the burial depth.
- Shovel: For rapid excavation.
However, equipment alone does not save lives without regular practical training. In the moment of an incident, under extreme stress and panic, there is no time to think. You must be trained so thoroughly that your actions become second nature, executed with maximum speed.
In the first 15 minutes of burial, the chances of survival are at their highest — and speed during extraction is achieved solely through constant training and real-field scenarios.
The Lesson That Remains
The events in the Karakoram, just like our own memories in the Greek and European mountains, lead to one single conclusion:
You do not conquer or subdue the mountain. The only thing you can do is respect it, keep training continuously, and listen to its breath.
Our thoughts, honor, and respect to all those who remained forever on the peaks of the world.
