Samaria Gorge Full Day Hiking Tour Details

Based in Chania, Crete, it is my absolute pleasure to show you the mountains of my homeland. On this trip, we will visit and cross the legendary Samaria Gorge. We will see parts of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) with summits exceeding 2,200m, and I can share with you how these landscapes have evolved over the last 25 years. I have crossed this gorge over a thousand times, in both summer and winter, yet I remain as inspired today as I was when I first started my mountain career here at the age of 12.

Our journey begins early in the morning. I will pick you up for a 1-hour transfer to the entrance of the Samaria Gorge. There, we will make a short stop for coffee and photos before starting our moderate hike from Xyloskalo (1,250m). The first hour follows a scenic downhill path under shady trees, surrounded by peaks towering above 2,000m. We will make small stops to discuss the unique nature of Samaria.

At the old Samaria village, we will have a longer break to refresh ourselves, talk about traditional Cretan life, and enjoy some local snacks. From there, the terrain levels out, becoming nice and easy. The soothing sound of the river will follow us until the end of our 16km hike. After the trek, you can enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear blue sea at Agia Roumeli, followed by a meal at a local restaurant to try delicious homemade dishes. Finally, we will take a 60-minute scenic ferry ride to our next destination before driving back, arriving by 20:00.
